Some minor damages recorded at the scene. INSET: The room where the fire started

One person died when gas exploded at a gas filling station at New Dawhenya in the Ningo Prampram District in the Greater Accra Region about 5:30 a.m. yesterday.

The deceased, Anthony Ahiabor, 47, was in the office at the Runnel Fuel Station when the explosion occurred.
The body has since been deposited at the Tema General Hospital mortuary for autopsy.

The explosion also caused destruction to structures at the station.

Some workers of the station told the Daily Graphic that Ahiabor was allegedly cooking in one of the rooms on the premises  when liquified petroleum gas was being discharged into a reservoir at the station.

Investigations

However, the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) said it was too early to establish the cause of the fire.

The Operations Officer at the Tema Regional Fire Command, Mr William Blankson, told journalists that the cause of the fire could only be determined after the GNFS had concluded investigations into the incident.
He said firemen from the Devtraco and the Tema Industrial Area Fire stations moved in swiftly to prevent the fire from spreading to other facilities.

According to him, on arrival at the scene, the firemen noticed that the fire had become intense, but they managed to bring it under control about 7:14 a.m yesterday.

Mr Blankson advised residents and business owners to adhere strictly to fire safety regulations to safeguard their properties.
